UCL Fantasy Matchday 2: best buys and captain picks

UCL Fantasy Matchday 2 preview: best buys, captain picks and differentials

UCL Fantasy Matchday 2 is a full league-phase round: all 36 teams play, the 18 fixtures run across Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 October, and the deadline is 18:45 on 13 October. Matchday 1 is still being played out, so nothing below is a read on early results - every number here is the current projection from our model, refreshed on 9 September. Because every club has a game, this is not a round about dodging blanks. It is a round about the six or seven squad slots after the obvious names, where cheap Lens and Sporting CP players are projected to beat names costing twice as much.

Matchday 2 fixtures: where the model sees points

Two fixtures frame the round. Arsenal at home to Lille carries both the highest win probability (70%) and the highest clean-sheet probability (45%) of the entire matchday, while Bayern München away at Viking carries the highest projected goal total of any team in the round (2.48). The marquee tie, Manchester City - Paris Saint-Germain, is the one big fixture the model wants you light on: City are only 40% to win their own home game and PSG 33%, so neither defence is worth paying up for.

The full round with kick-off times is on the UCL Fantasy schedule page, and the underlying win, draw and clean-sheet numbers are on the market probabilities page.

Goalkeepers for Matchday 2

Two keepers tie at the top on 4.00 projected points: David Raya (6.0m, Arsenal) and Alisson Becker (6.0m, Liverpool). Arsenal have the better clean-sheet number of the pair at 45% against 44%, but Liverpool hold up far better beyond this round - Alisson Becker scores 13.6 on a six-matchday decay-weighted basis against 13.1 for the Arsenal option, because Arsenal follow Lille with a trip to Bayern München.

The cheaper route is the more interesting one. Josep Martinez (4.5m, Inter) is 3.70 projected points well below the premium price, with Inter at home to Club Brugge (34% clean sheet) and Shakhtar Donetsk to come in Matchday 3 - his 13.3 weighted score sits within a fraction of the premium pair. Cheaper still, Zion Suzuki (4.0m, Aston Villa) is the best points-per-million keeper of the round at 0.90 per million behind a 37% Aston Villa clean sheet, and Luiz Junior (4.0m, Villarreal) is a straight alternative on Villarreal hosting Napoli.

Defenders for Matchday 2

The best-projected defender of the matchday is not a name most managers own. Matthieu Udol (4.5m, Lens) tops the position on 4.90 projected points and is the best points-per-million pick in the whole game at 1.09 per million, with Lens at home to Sporting CP giving him a 32% clean-sheet chance on top of the volume the model likes him for. His three-matchday line reads 4.9 -> 3.8 -> 4.1.

For a premium defender, Virgil van Dijk (6.0m, Liverpool) is the pick: 4.70 projected points, the strongest clean-sheet backing of any defender in the round (Liverpool are 44% to keep it clean at LASK), and the top defensive weighted score in the game at 15.3. Pairing him with Alisson Becker doubles up on the same Liverpool clean sheet, which is exactly the kind of correlated stack worth making when the fixture supports it.

Two budget defenders deserve their own line. Maximilian Mittelstaedt (4.5m, VfB Stuttgart) is on penalty duty for VfB Stuttgart with a 73% share, which is a rare profile at his price - a defender with a striker’s bonus attached, 4.30 projected points, 0.96 per million. David Raum (4.5m, RB Leipzig) is the same idea at RB Leipzig, on a 45% penalty share with Leipzig hosting PSV Eindhoven. Matty Cash (4.5m, Aston Villa) completes the cheap set on Villa’s home game (4.10 points, 0.91 per million).

The hidden gem is Sergi Altimira (4.0m, Sporting CP), projected 4.10 points at the cheapest end of the market almost entirely on ball recoveries - the model has him around 8 recoveries in roughly 75 minutes, and his weighted score of 14.2 works out at 3.56 per million, the best in the game. He sits at about 2% ownership, and the full ranking behind numbers like his is on the UCL Fantasy player picks page.

One caution on the template: Achraf Hakimi (6.0m, Paris Saint-Germain) is in 30% of squads and is only 3.80 points for this round, but his 15.3 weighted score is among the top three of any defender, so that is a hold rather than a sell. Riccardo Calafiori (32% owned) and Nuno Mendes (32% owned) are the opposite case - see the sell section.

Gabriel (6.0m) is the other well-owned Arsenal defender and is fine on 3.90 points behind the best clean-sheet fixture of the round, but Virgil van Dijk at nearly the same money has a far better run.

Midfielders for Matchday 2

Midfield is where the round is won, and the top is unusually tight. Bruno Fernandes (9.0m, Manchester United) and Dominik Szoboszlai (7.0m, Liverpool) are level on 5.50 projected points, with Lamine Yamal (10.0m, Barcelona) at 5.40 and Luis Diaz (8.0m, Bayern München) at 5.30 just behind.

Bruno Fernandes (9.0m, Manchester United) is the best long-term hold in the game: a 91% penalty share, 82 projected minutes and a six-matchday weighted score of 20.3, the highest of any player in any position. His actual Matchday 2 assignment is awkward - Manchester United are 32% to win away at Atletico Madrid - and that is precisely why the model still rates the wider window so highly. Dominik Szoboszlai (7.0m, Liverpool) has the friendlier fixture at a lower price: Liverpool away at LASK, a 90% penalty share, and a 39% chance of sharing in a clean sheet.

Lamine Yamal (10.0m, Barcelona) stays the premium Barcelona route at 5.40 points against 5.20 for Raphinha (9.5m, Barcelona), and Barcelona travel to Galatasaray with 2.03 expected goals. Luis Diaz (8.0m, Bayern München) is the value premium: 5.30 points, Bayern München away at Viking, and several million cheaper than the other names in this bracket. Bukayo Saka (8.5m, Arsenal) is projected 4.50 points for Arsenal but on only 58 minutes, so he is the one premium here with real rotation risk attached.

Mid-price differentials are where the edge is. Florian Thauvin (6.5m, Lens) is 4.90 points on a 92% penalty share with Lens at home. Hans Vanaken (6.5m, Club Brugge) is 4.60 points and a 17.3 weighted score for a club most managers will not look at. Iliman Ndiaye (6.5m, Manchester City) is on 4.50 points for Manchester City and has one of the best three-matchday runs of any midfielder at his price (4.5 -> 5.5 -> 4.6).

The stand-out differential of the matchday is Zlatko Tripic (5.5m, Viking). Viking host Bayern München and are only 16% to win, yet the model still has him at 4.80 points, because he takes Viking’s penalties (82% share) and is involved in almost everything they create. His weighted score of 17.9 is higher than that of Bayern’s most-owned attacker, and his next three matchdays read 4.8 -> 4.5 -> 6.1.

Budget midfield: Yacine Titraoui (4.5m, Lens) is the best points-per-million midfielder in the round at 0.98 per million (4.40 points), Rodrigo Zalazar (4.5m, Sporting CP) is just behind at 0.91 per million, and Luciano Valente (5.0m, Feyenoord) is the Feyenoord option on 4.30 points. Any of the three frees up the money that pays for a premium forward. Note the cap of three players from a single club - you cannot take the whole Lens block, so pick two of Matthieu Udol, Florian Thauvin and Yacine Titraoui at most.

Forwards for Matchday 2

The premium forwards are separated by their fixtures rather than their prices. Kylian Mbappé (11.0m, Real Madrid) leads the position on 4.40 points with Real Madrid away at Roma, and his 17.5 weighted score is the best of any forward. Serhou Guirassy (8.5m, Borussia Dortmund) is level on 4.40 points for a good deal less money, with Borussia Dortmund away at Bodø/Glimt. Erling Haaland (11.0m, Manchester City) is 4.20 points on a 79% penalty share, and his Matchday 3 number (5.6) is the highest of the three - Manchester City host AEK Athens next.

The value forward the model likes most is Nicolo Tresoldi (7.0m, Club Brugge): 4.10 points, a 90% penalty share and 81 projected minutes, which is more than any of the premiums get. Victor Osimhen (8.0m, Galatasaray) is the other one - 4.20 points, an 83% penalty share and a 16.1 weighted score that beats forwards costing three million more.

At the cheap end, Moses Usor (6.0m, LASK) is 4.00 points on an 84% penalty share for LASK against Liverpool, and Danijel Sturm (5.5m, Slavia Prague) is the best points-per-million forward in the round at 0.73 per million. Both are one-matchday plays rather than season-long holds, and both are owned by almost nobody.

Captain picks for UCL Fantasy Matchday 2

The captain scores double in UCL Fantasy, so the armband is the single biggest decision of the round. Ranked by the model:

#PlayerFixtureProjected pointsDoubledPenalty share
1Dominik Szoboszlai (7.0m)[A]LASK5.5011.090%
2Bruno Fernandes (9.0m)[A]Atletico Madrid5.5011.091%
3Lamine Yamal (10.0m)[A]Galatasaray5.4010.825%
4Luis Diaz (8.0m)[A]Viking5.3010.6none
5Raphinha (9.5m)[A]Galatasaray5.2010.475%

The pick is Dominik Szoboszlai. He and Bruno Fernandes are level on projected points, but Liverpool are 63% to win at LASK while Manchester United are 32% at Atletico Madrid, and Dominik Szoboszlai adds a realistic clean-sheet share on top of goals, assists and penalties. Bruno Fernandes is the armband if you prefer the fixture-proof profile - nobody in the game has a better six-matchday outlook - and Lamine Yamal is the third option, with Barcelona’s 2.03 expected goals at Galatasaray the highest of any away side in the round bar Bayern München.

Treat captaincy as a plan rather than a single choice. Own Bruno Fernandes and you also hold a captain projected 5.4 in Matchday 3 and a joint-best 6.1 in Matchday 4. Own Erling Haaland instead and Matchday 3 is when he becomes the obvious armband, at 5.6 projected points against AEK Athens.

Our optimal teams solver for UCL Fantasy re-solves a full squad against these numbers live, and the predicted lineups page is where to check rotation risk on any of the five before the deadline. Kick-off times for both nights are on the Matchday 2 schedule.

Who to sell before Matchday 2

Four heavily owned players the model has turned against:

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (10.0m, Paris Saint-Germain) (28% owned, 3.40 points) is a softer version of the same problem - top-of-market price, mid-table projection. With two free transfers per matchday there is room to act on two of these without a hit.

Looking ahead to Matchday 3 and Matchday 4

Buying for one round alone is rarely right, so here are the fixture swings worth planning around. Arsenal go [H]Lille -> [A]Bayern München -> [A]Slavia Prague: a great round, a bad one, then a 45% clean-sheet game. Liverpool run [A]LASK -> [H]Villarreal -> [A]Fenerbahçe with a clean-sheet probability of 37% or better in all three, the best defensive run in the competition. Inter go [H]Club Brugge -> [H]Shakhtar Donetsk (45% clean sheet) -> [A]Feyenoord, which is why Josep Martinez and Federico Dimarco (5.0m, Inter) are buys now rather than next matchday. Manchester City follow PSG with AEK Athens at home, so City assets are a Matchday 3 buy, not a Matchday 2 one.

Every number here is on the UCL Fantasy player picks page, which ranks the whole pool by projected points for any matchday you select. More rounds are collected in the UCL Fantasy preview hub, the previous round is here - UCL Fantasy Matchday 1 preview - and our fantasy football guides go deeper on the scoring system.

Should I sell Harry Kane before Matchday 2?

Downgrade rather than panic. He is 55% owned and projected 4.30 points for the round, but his six-matchday weighted score of 14.2 trails Kylian Mbappé (17.5) and Erling Haaland (16.9) at exactly the same price, and the model has him on roughly 54 minutes rather than a full game.
