WSL Fantasy Gameweek 8: captain picks and best buys

WSL Fantasy Gameweek 8 preview: best buys, captain picks and differentials

WSL Fantasy Gameweek 8 is a seven-match round with no WSL2 fixtures, and the transfers worth making this week are the ones that set you up for Gameweeks 9 and 10 as well. Arsenal and Chelsea have the two best three-Gameweek programs in the game, Manchester United's run gets easier the further it goes, and several of the most-owned midfielders are now out-projected in every one of the next three Gameweeks by cheaper players. This preview covers who to buy, who to captain, the differentials and who to sell, and every pick is judged on Gameweeks 8 to 10, not on this round alone.

Last week's analysis is still up in the WSL Fantasy Gameweek 7 preview. Every projection below comes from the WSL Fantasy player picks page, pulled on 25 October, and new to the game? Start with the WSL Fantasy guide.

The programs: whose next three Gameweeks are worth owning

Arsenal's [H]AVL → [A]LIV → [H]LCL is the best attacking run in the game at 7.92 expected goals over three Gameweeks, and it opens with the highest expected goals of the week: Aston Villa at home, with an 85% win probability and 3.29 expected goals. Liverpool away in Gameweek 9 is the one to plan around, not to avoid, because London City at home follows straight after. Chelsea are right behind on [A]CHA → [H]EVE → [H]MCI, 7.46 expected goals and the most expected clean sheets of any club at 1.39. Their trip to Charlton carries the highest clean sheet chance of the week at 56%, and Everton at home follows before Manchester City visit in Gameweek 10.

Manchester United are the program that improves with time. [A]EVE → [A]AVL → [H]CRY gives them 6.49 expected goals and 1.08 expected clean sheets, third in the game on both, and the Crystal Palace home game in Gameweek 10 is the best fixture of their run. Manchester City are fourth on [A]LCL → [H]WHU → [A]CHE: London City away is middling, West Ham at home in Gameweek 9 is the best attacking fixture of that Gameweek, and Chelsea away in Gameweek 10 is the hard one. Tottenham ([A]BIC → [H]BHA → [H]EVE) and Brighton ([H]CRY → [A]TOT → [H]LIV) are the best of the rest.

At the bottom, Everton ([H]MAN → [A]CHE → [A]TOT) and Charlton ([H]CHE → [A]CRY → [A]WHU) have the weakest attacking programs among WSL clubs, and Aston Villa's [A]ARS → [H]MAN → [H]BIC is the one that turns: one of the two hardest fixtures of the week at Arsenal, then two home games.

The game's player pool also includes the WSL2 clubs, and on the current fixture list none of them has a fixture in Gameweek 8. They play in Gameweeks 9 and 10, so their three-Gameweek totals cover two matches and cannot be compared with the table above. Bristol City go [A]IPS → [A]SHU and Newcastle United, the most-owned WSL2 club, go [H]BUR → [A]SUN. A WSL2 player you own scores nothing this week, so if you have a free transfer and a bench spot that will not cover him, this is the week to move him on.

Goalkeepers for Gameweek 8

Hannah Hampton (5.5m, CHE) remains the keeper to own, and 58% of managers already do. Chelsea's [A]CHA → [H]EVE → [H]MCI gives her 5.0 → 5.0 → 4.2, the highest three-Gameweek total of any goalkeeper at 14.2, starting with a 56% clean sheet chance at Charlton. Gameweek 10 against Manchester City is the weakest of the three and she still projects 4.2. Hold her.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce (5.5m, MAN) is the alternative for managers who would rather spend their Chelsea slots further forward. Manchester United's [A]EVE → [A]AVL → [H]CRY gives her 3.7 → 3.9 → 4.1, a rising line and the second-best total at 11.7, and she stays at 4.1 in Gameweek 11. 19% of managers own her. She is the keeper you can buy and stop thinking about.

This round and the three-Gameweek view disagree on the next names. Chiamaka Nnadozie (5.0m, BHA) projects 3.8 this week, the second-best keeper score, because Brighton host Crystal Palace, but [H]CRY → [A]TOT → [H]LIV drops her to 2.9 at Tottenham. Constance Picaud (5.0m, WHU) at West Ham is a cheap differential with 3.5 → 2.3 → 3.9: Liverpool at home is a fair start and Charlton at home in Gameweek 10 is her best fixture of the three. For a keeper you buy and keep, take Tullis-Joyce. For one week, Nnadozie.

Defenders for Gameweek 8

Ellie Carpenter (7.0m, CHE) is the top defender in the game and a clear hold at 40% ownership. Chelsea's [A]CHA → [H]EVE → [H]MCI gives her 6.4 → 6.0 → 4.3, 16.7 over three Gameweeks, with 0.20 expected assists this week on top of the clean sheet. A Hampton plus Carpenter stack doubles up on the same clean sheet, which is exactly what you want while Chelsea's run is this good.

Ona Batlle (6.0m, ARS) is the Arsenal defender to own. [H]AVL → [A]LIV → [H]LCL gives her 5.5 → 4.6 → 4.9 for 15.0, second among all defenders, and at 6.0m she is 1.0m cheaper than Carpenter. The Liverpool game does not hurt her much, because Arsenal still keep a decent clean sheet chance there and she carries attacking threat every week. Leah Williamson (5.5m, ARS) is the cheaper Arsenal option at 4.7 → 4.1 → 4.4, and Maya Le Tissier (6.0m, MAN) is the steadiest defender in the pool outside the top two clubs: Manchester United's [A]EVE → [A]AVL → [H]CRY gives her 4.8 → 4.8 → 5.3, she takes penalties, and she is projected for 87 minutes, more than any other defender on this list.

Alex Greenwood (6.0m, MCI) is the defender to time. City's [A]LCL → [H]WHU → [A]CHE gives her 4.5 → 6.3 → 2.9: a middling start, then 6.3 against West Ham, the best defender projection of Gameweek 9, then a drop at Chelsea. She is worth holding through Gameweek 9 if you own her. If you are buying a City defender now, you are buying the West Ham game and little else, so a transfer in for Gameweek 9 does the same job a week later.

The differentials are both under 5% owned. Natalia Ramos (5.0m, LIV) has the best points per million of any defender this week (1.06) and projects 5.3 at West Ham, the fourth-best defender score of the round. Liverpool's [A]WHU → [H]ARS → [A]BHA dips against Arsenal in Gameweek 9 (3.1) and recovers at Brighton (4.4), so she is two good fixtures out of three for 5.0m. Anna Sandberg (5.5m, MAN) is the Manchester United alternative with a rising line, 4.0 → 4.2 → 5.2, and 0.17 expected assists a game. Alejandra Bernabé (4.5m, LIV) is the cheapest defender worth a slot at 4.5m, on the same Liverpool program as Ramos for 4.2 → 2.3 → 3.2.

Midfielders for Gameweek 8

Jessica Park (8.0m, MAN) is the midfielder to buy, and this is the week to do it. Manchester United's [A]EVE → [A]AVL → [H]CRY gives her 4.5 → 5.3 → 6.3, the highest three-Gameweek total of any midfielder at 16.1, and the line rises every week into a Gameweek 10 projection no other midfielder reaches. She is projected for 74 minutes and only 18% of managers own her. Buying her now means you have her before the two best fixtures of her run, not during them.

Alyssa Thompson (8.0m, CHE) tops the midfield projections for this week alone at 5.5, carried by 0.43 expected goals at Charlton. Over three Gameweeks she goes 5.5 → 5.0 → 4.1, a falling line, and she is projected for 58 minutes, so this is where the round ranking and the three-Gameweek ranking disagree. If you are buying one midfielder and keeping her, buy Park. If you have a Chelsea slot free and want Gameweek 8 and 9, Thompson is the pick.

Signe Gaupset (6.0m, TOT) is the value pick of the position. Tottenham's [A]BIC → [H]BHA → [H]EVE gives her 5.4 → 4.9 → 4.5 for 14.8, second among midfielders over three Gameweeks, at 6.0m and 7% ownership. She is projected for 83 minutes, the most of any midfielder in this section. Océane Hurtré (6.0m, BIC) is the other 6.0m option: Birmingham's [H]TOT → [A]LCL → [A]AVL gives her 5.1 → 4.2 → 4.5, a flat line from a nailed starter, and 17% of managers already have her.

Georgia Stanway (6.5m, ARS) is the Arsenal midfielder to own for the program, 5.2 → 4.2 → 4.5 on [H]AVL → [A]LIV → [H]LCL, with 0.42 clean sheet probability feeding her score as well. On a tighter budget, Wieke Kaptein (5.5m, CHE) gives you a Chelsea midfielder at 5.5m with 4.4 → 4.0 → 3.2, and Julie Blakstad (5.5m, TOT) is a 5.5m Tottenham starter on 4.2 → 3.8 → 3.9. Both are under 3% owned.

Fran Kirby (6.0m, BHA) is a one-week buy. Brighton host Crystal Palace and she projects 5.4, within 0.1 of the best midfield score of the round, with 0.29 expected assists. But [H]CRY → [A]TOT → [H]LIV drops her to 4.0 and 3.8, and Gameweeks 11 to 13 are lower still (3.4, 2.4, 2.2). If you buy her, plan the sale for Gameweek 9.

Forwards for Gameweek 8

Alessia Russo (11.5m, ARS) is the best player in the game for the next three Gameweeks. Arsenal's [H]AVL → [A]LIV → [H]LCL gives her 8.4 → 6.4 → 7.0, a total of 21.8 that nobody else in the pool reaches, and her Gameweek 8 projection is the highest of the week by almost two points. She takes Arsenal's penalties and carries 0.67 expected goals against Villa. At 47% ownership she is not a differential; she is the player you need to own to keep pace.

Elisabeth Terland (7.0m, MAN) is the differential forward, at 7% ownership. Manchester United's [A]EVE → [A]AVL → [H]CRY gives her 4.8 → 5.9 → 7.1, second among forwards over three Gameweeks at 17.8, and her Gameweek 10 projection against Crystal Palace is the best of any forward that week. This is the clearest case in the preview where the round ranking misleads: she ties for only fourth among forwards this week, and she is the one to buy if you are buying a forward to keep.

Kiko Seike (7.0m, BHA) is the other buy. Brighton's [H]CRY → [A]TOT → [H]LIV gives her 6.6 → 5.0 → 4.7, 16.3 over three Gameweeks, and her 6.6 this week is the second-best projection of any player. The run fades after Gameweek 10 (4.2, 2.9, 2.6), so she is a three-week hold, not a season one. Viviane Asseyi (8.0m, WHU) is the West Ham penalty taker and a fixture-by-fixture pick: [H]LIV → [A]MCI → [H]CHA gives her 5.3 → 2.8 → 6.0, strong in the two home games and weak at City in between.

On a budget, Alice Bergström (4.5m, LIV) is projected for 76 minutes at 4.5m and gives you 3.7 → 2.4 → 3.3 on Liverpool's [A]WHU → [H]ARS → [A]BHA, the third-best points per million of any forward this week (0.82). Amalie Vangsgaard (6.5m, AVL) is a buy for next week, not this one: Aston Villa go to Arsenal and she projects 3.1, but 4.1 against Manchester United and 6.2 against Birmingham follow, both at home, and she holds 6.2 in Gameweek 11. At 1% ownership she is a Gameweek 9 transfer to note now.

Khadija Shaw (12.5m, MCI) is the most-owned player in the game at 68%. Her program, [A]LCL → [H]WHU → [A]CHE, gives her 4.8 → 7.4 → 3.7: a fair start, then 7.4 against West Ham, the highest projection of any player in Gameweek 9, then the Chelsea trip. Keep her for that Gameweek 9 home game. If you need the funds for Russo, Shaw is the one to give up, because Russo out-scores her by 5.9 points over the three Gameweeks, but you can make that move a week later and keep the West Ham game.

Captain picks for Gameweek 8

Alessia Russo (11.5m, ARS) is the captain, on [H]AVL → [A]LIV → [H]LCL. Her 8.4 against Aston Villa is the top projection of the week, Arsenal carry 3.29 expected goals, and she takes the penalties. Doubled, she is worth 16.8 points, almost four clear of any alternative.

Kiko Seike (6.6 against Crystal Palace) is the second choice and the differential captain at 12% ownership. Ellie Carpenter (6.4 at Charlton) is third, and the safest of the three because her score does not need a goal. Captaincy is a plan across Gameweeks: in Gameweek 9 the top captain is Shaw against West Ham (7.4), with Russo (6.4) close behind, and in Gameweek 10 it is Terland (7.1) or Russo (7.0). Owning Russo plus one of Shaw or Terland covers all three weeks. For the reasoning behind captain picks, see our guide on how to pick your fantasy captain.

Who to sell before Gameweek 8

Alexia Putellas (8.5m, LCL) is the biggest sell, and the round to do it is this one. She is owned by 58% of managers and London City's [H]MCI → [H]BIC → [A]ARS gives her 3.9 → 5.0 → 2.7. Birmingham at home in Gameweek 9 is a decent fixture and 5.0 is a respectable score, but Park out-projects her in all three Gameweeks (4.5 → 5.3 → 6.3) for 0.5m less, so there is no week in the window where keeping Putellas is the better hand.

Lauren Hemp (8.0m, MCI), owned by 49% of managers, is the same story at City. Her line is 3.3 → 4.8 → 2.5 on [A]LCL → [H]WHU → [A]CHE: the West Ham game is a good one for her, but Gaupset beats her in every one of the three Gameweeks (5.4 → 4.9 → 4.5) and frees 2.0m. Gaupset is ahead in Gameweek 9 as well, so waiting for the West Ham game buys you nothing.

Kerstin Casparij (8.0m, MCI), owned by 32% of managers, is the expensive defender to move on. She is projected for 53 minutes and goes 2.9 → 4.0 → 1.9, so even the West Ham home game does not lift her to Greenwood's level, and Greenwood costs 2.0m less. Kirsty Hanson (8.0m, TOT), owned by 12% of managers, is projected for only 19 minutes at Birmingham this week, which puts her at 1.4, and her teammate Gaupset is the cheaper and better way into Tottenham's [A]BIC → [H]BHA → [H]EVE.

Mapi León (5.5m, LCL), owned by 27% of managers, is a sell you can wait a round on. London City's program is [H]MCI → [H]BIC → [A]ARS: they host Manchester City and Birmingham first, and she projects 3.7 and 4.5, which is fine. The drop comes in Gameweek 10 at Arsenal (1.8), so plan the transfer for Gameweek 10 rather than spending one on her now.

Best Free Hit team for Gameweek 8

Gameweek 8 is not an obvious Free Hit week, because every WSL club has a fixture and the template already covers most of the best picks. It is worth considering only if your squad carries several WSL2 players, who have no fixture this week. This is the eleven that maximises Gameweek 8 projections within the game's squad rules and the three-per-club limit, with Russo as captain:
