UCL Fantasy Rules & Scoring 2026/27: Budget, Transfers, Points & Prices
UCL Fantasy is UEFA's official Champions League fantasy game. This page is the complete 2026/27 rule set — squad rules, budget, transfers, the full points table, player prices and every matchday deadline — checked against UEFA's own published rules. If you only read one section, make it the scoring table: two of the ways you score points in UCL Fantasy have no equivalent in Fantasy Premier League, and they change which players are worth buying.
Squad rules and budget
You pick a 15-player squad and 11 of them score points on any given matchday.
- Squad size: 15 players — 2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders, 3 forwards
- Budget: €100m during the league phase, rising to €105m once the league phase ends
- Club limit: a maximum of 3 players from any one club during the league phase
- Free transfers: 2 every matchday in the league phase; each additional transfer costs 4 points
- Before Matchday 1: transfers are unlimited, so the opening deadline is the one moment you can rebuild from scratch for free
- Captain: scores double points, and can be switched between the Tuesday and Wednesday games of the same matchday
- Substitutions: allowed within a matchday, once the first day's games have finished
The rising budget matters more than it looks. Squads built tight to €100m in the league phase get €5m of headroom for the knockouts, which is usually enough to upgrade one mid-price player to a premium for the rounds where the biggest clubs meet.

Why ball recoveries change how you build a squad
A point for every three balls recovered is the rule that separates UCL Fantasy from FPL, and most managers under-price it. A holding midfielder or an aggressive full-back who makes 9–12 recoveries in a match banks 3–4 points before he touches a goal, an assist or a clean sheet. Add the 2-point appearance and a nailed defensive midfielder has a floor of 5–6 points on a night when he does nothing memorable at all.
That floor is what makes cheap defensive players the best value in the game. In FPL, a £4.5m defender who does not keep a clean sheet returns 2 points; in UCL Fantasy, the equivalent player is still returning 5. Because the recovery count is a volume statistic rather than a rare event, it is also far more predictable than goals — which is exactly the kind of signal a projection model handles well.
Our UCL Fantasy player picks page projects recoveries explicitly for every player, so the ranking already reflects this rather than treating recoveries as noise.
Player of the Match is not FPL bonus points
FPL splits 3, 2 and 1 bonus points between the top three performers in a match. UCL Fantasy does not: one player takes the Player of the Match award and 3 points, and everyone else gets nothing. That is a winner-take-all distribution, so it rewards concentrating your squad on the players most likely to dominate a match rather than spreading across several good-but-not-great options.
The 2026/27 league phase format
The Champions League has run a 36-team single league phase since 2024/25 — there are no groups. Every club plays eight different opponents, four at home and four away, and the eight-match table decides who progresses. The top eight go straight to the round of 16; ninth to 24th enter a knockout play-off round.
For fantasy purposes the practical consequence is that each club's eight fixtures are different, so fixture difficulty varies far more between clubs than it does in a group format where everyone in a group shares the same opponents. Checking the draw before you build a squad is worth more here than in any domestic fantasy game — our UCL fixtures and difficulty page rates every fixture from live match odds.

Player prices
Prices run from around €4.0m for squad fillers to €11.0m for the most expensive attackers. A selection of the 2026/27 prices UEFA published at launch:
- Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid) — €11.0m
- Harry Kane (Bayern München) — €11.0m
- Erling Haaland (Manchester City) — €11.0m
- Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Paris Saint-Germain) — €10.0m
- Julián Álvarez (Atlético de Madrid) — €10.0m
- Lamine Yamal (Barcelona) — €10.0m
- Ousmane Dembélé (Paris Saint-Germain) — €10.0m
- Vinícius Júnior (Real Madrid) — €9.5m
- Lautaro Martínez (Inter) — €9.5m
- Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) — €9.0m
- Michael Olise (Bayern München) — €9.0m
- Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray) — €8.0m
- Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool) — €7.0m
- David Raya (Arsenal) — €6.0m
- Nuno Mendes (Paris Saint-Germain) — €6.0m
- Gabriel (Arsenal) — €6.0m
Price alone tells you nothing about value. What matters is points per million against the fixtures actually in front of that player, which is what our optimal team calculator solves for — it returns the highest-scoring legal squad inside the budget rather than the most expensive one.
Turning the rules into a squad
The rule set points to a fairly specific squad shape:
- Defenders score goals at 6 points — the same as goalkeepers and more than forwards. Attacking centre-backs and full-backs from clubs that dominate possession are genuinely viable as point-scorers, not just clean-sheet holders.
- Recoveries reward volume midfielders — the cheap defensive midfielder who never scores is a better fantasy asset here than in any other major fantasy game.
- The 3-per-club limit forces breadth in the league phase, so you cannot simply triple-stack the best team; plan which club you spend your three slots on.
- Two free transfers a matchday is generous compared with FPL's one — you can react to the fixture swing between matchdays rather than banking transfers for weeks.
- The mid-matchday captain switch is free value. Captain a Tuesday player, and if he blanks, move the armband to your best Wednesday option.
For the strategy behind those decisions, read our UCL Fantasy tips guide, and check predicted line-ups before every deadline so you are not starting someone who is about to be rotated.
FAQ
What is the UCL Fantasy budget for 2026/27?
€100m during the league phase, rising to €105m after the league phase ends. You also cannot hold more than three players from any single club while the league phase is running.
How many free transfers do you get in UCL Fantasy?
Two free transfers every matchday during the league phase. Each additional transfer costs 4 points. Transfers are unlimited before the Matchday 1 deadline, so there is no reason not to keep refining your opening squad.
How many points is a goal in UCL Fantasy?
A goal is worth 4 points to a forward, 5 to a midfielder and 6 to a defender or goalkeeper, with an extra point for any goal scored from outside the box. Assists are worth 3 points to every position.
Does UCL Fantasy have bonus points like FPL?
No. Instead of splitting 3, 2 and 1 bonus points between three players, UCL Fantasy awards 3 points to a single Player of the Match in each game. It is winner-take-all, which makes it less predictable and worth less as a tie-breaker between two similar picks than FPL bonus.
What are ball recoveries worth in UCL Fantasy?
One point for every three balls recovered. It is the scoring route with no FPL equivalent and it is why defensive midfielders and busy full-backs are unusually good value — a player making 9–12 recoveries banks 3–4 points before any attacking return.
When is the UCL Fantasy Matchday 1 deadline?
Tuesday 8 September 2026. The eight league-phase matchdays then run through to Matchday 8 on Wednesday 27 January 2027, with the final on Saturday 5 June 2027.
Can you change your captain during a matchday?
Yes. Because each matchday is split over Tuesday and Wednesday, you can make substitutions and switch the captain's armband once the first day's games have finished. The player wearing the armband at the end of the matchday scores the double.
