UWCL Fantasy Matchday 1: best buys and captain picks
UWCL Fantasy Matchday 1 preview: best buys, captain picks and differentials
UWCL Fantasy 2026/2027 opens with a full nine-fixture league-phase round on 22 and 23 September, and every one of the 18 clubs plays. That makes Matchday 1 the only round in the competition you pick with a completely blank sheet — and it is also the round where the next three matchdays should already be doing most of the deciding. The league phase is six matchdays long, so a squad built purely for the opening night is a squad you will be paying transfers to unpick by October.
Below: the three-matchday programs worth owning, the best buys by position with their fixture runs, the captain ranking, the differentials almost nobody has, and the popular names the model does not rate. Every number here comes from our own projection model — the full per-player table is on the UWCL Fantasy player picks page.
The programs: whose next three Matchdays are worth owning
Rank the league phase on the next three rounds rather than on Matchday 1 alone and the picture changes in two places. Barcelona carry the best three-round attacking run in the game at 9.17 expected goals across [H]Paris FC → [A]Roma → [A]HB Køge, and Arsenal carry the best defensive one — 1.31 expected clean sheets from [H]HB Køge → [A]Paris FC → [H]Benfica. Those are the two programs you can buy into and then stop thinking about.
Chelsea have the single best fixture of the opening round — [H]Austria Wien W → [A]OL Lyonnes → [H]Roma starts with a 92% win probability and a 62% clean-sheet chance, the highest of either kind on Matchday 1 — but their Matchday 2 trip to OL Lyonnes is a genuine game, so a Chelsea defender is a strong two-out-of-three buy rather than a set-and-forget. The opposite shape is Manchester City: the hardest opening night of any elite side at [A]Bayern München → [H]Real Madrid → [H]Paris Saint Germain, and then the best rounds 4 to 6 in the competition. If you are buying one City asset and keeping her, the weak first fixture is the price of entry rather than a reason to wait.
Bayern München's 7.23 expected goals over three rounds looks like a target until you read the clean-sheet column: 0.68 from [H]Manchester City → [A]Benfica → [H]Real Madrid, the weakest of the top six. Buy that attack, not that defence. Round-by-round dates are on the UWCL Fantasy schedule, and the underlying win and clean-sheet numbers on market probabilities.

All 18 clubs have a fixture in Matchday 1 and in each of the next two rounds, so no side blanks and every three-round total above is measured over the same three games. The optimal teams solver weighs these same programs live if you would rather start from a solved squad.
Goalkeepers for Matchday 1
Hannah Hampton (5.5m, Chelsea) is the pick of the position on both horizons — 4.2 projected in Matchday 1 and 11.1 over the first three, off a program of [H]Austria Wien W → [A]OL Lyonnes → [H]Roma that opens with the round's highest clean-sheet probability at 62%. She is 2% owned.
The value route is better than it looks. Gemma Font (4.5m, Barcelona) projects 3.9 and 10.9 over the same three rounds behind [H]Paris FC → [A]Roma → [A]HB Køge, and the model has her at a 0.99 starter factor in every one of the six matchdays. That matters more than the price: the most-owned goalkeeper in the game is her 6.0m team-mate Cata Coll, at 60% ownership, and the model projects her no minutes and 0.0 points in any of the six league-phase rounds. If you want the Barcelona clean sheets, the model says the way to have them is the cheaper name. Christiane Endler (4.5m, OL Lyonnes) is the third route at 10.9 over three behind [A]Servette → [H]Chelsea → [H]Inter.
Defenders: where Matchday 1 is actually won
Ellie Carpenter (5.0m, Chelsea) is the standout, and unusually she tops the position on the round and on the three-round total: 6.0 → 3.4 → 5.4 for 14.8, at 1.20 points per million. The dip in the middle is the Lyon away game, and it is worth sitting through — her Matchday 3 score is back to 5.4. At 2% ownership she is a differential and the top-projected defender at the same time, which is a rare combination this early.
Selma Bacha (5.0m, OL Lyonnes) is the template alternative at 24% owned, 5.3 → 3.6 → 4.8 behind [A]Servette → [H]Chelsea → [H]Inter, and Carla Juliá (4.5m, Barcelona) matches her three-round total for half a million less off [H]Paris FC → [A]Roma → [A]HB Køge. Both are legitimate; the Barcelona route also carries the better Matchday 3 fixture.
Two budget defenders are doing more than their price suggests. Martina Fernández (4.0m, Barcelona) projects 12.3 across the three on 74 projected minutes, more than any other Barcelona defender, and Estela Carbonell (4.5m, Juventus) returns 12.7 on 76 minutes behind [H]Benfica → [A]BK Häcken → [A]Austria Wien W, a run carrying 0.94 expected clean sheets — the best of any side outside the top four. Neither is above 1% owned. If you need to fund a premium forward, this is where the money comes from.
One more worth naming: Ashley Lawrence (4.5m, OL Lyonnes) returns 11.8 over three on 76 projected minutes behind [A]Servette → [H]Chelsea → [H]Inter, against 12.0 for the 6.0m Wendie Renard on 60. Wendie Renard carries a 0.46 penalty share, which is a real ceiling advantage for a defender, but the cheaper team-mate gives almost the same three-round return on more minutes. Check the projected XIs on predicted lineups before the deadline.
| Defender | Team | Price | Owned | MD1 | MD1–MD3 | Program |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ellie Carpenter | Chelsea | 5.0m | 2% | 6.0 | 14.8 | [H]Austria Wien W → [A]OL Lyonnes → [H]Roma |
| Selma Bacha | OL Lyonnes | 5.0m | 24% | 5.3 | 13.7 | [A]Servette → [H]Chelsea → [H]Inter |
| Carla Juliá | Barcelona | 4.5m | 2% | 5.2 | 13.7 | [H]Paris FC → [A]Roma → [A]HB Køge |
| Estela Carbonell | Juventus | 4.5m | 0% | 4.5 | 12.7 | [H]Benfica → [A]BK Häcken → [A]Austria Wien W |
| Martina Fernández | Barcelona | 4.0m | 1% | 4.2 | 12.3 | [H]Paris FC → [A]Roma → [A]HB Køge |
| Ashley Lawrence | OL Lyonnes | 4.5m | 6% | 4.6 | 11.8 | [A]Servette → [H]Chelsea → [H]Inter |
| Katie McCabe | Chelsea | 5.5m | 1% | 5.0 | 12.3 | [H]Austria Wien W → [A]OL Lyonnes → [H]Roma |
Midfielders: one name leads every horizon
Vivianne Miedema (5.0m, Manchester City) tops the position on the round (5.3), on the three-round total (15.5) and on a decay-weighted six-round score of 19.2 — the second highest of any player in the game. Her program is [A]Bayern München → [H]Real Madrid → [H]Paris Saint Germain, the hardest opening night of the elite sides, and her projection barely moves for it: 5.3 → 5.0 → 5.2. That flatness is the argument. At 5.0m she also has the best decay-weighted points per million of any player in the game, and only 3% of managers own her.
Erin Cuthbert (4.5m, Chelsea) is the budget-enabler version: 5.0 → 3.5 → 5.1 for 13.6 behind [H]Austria Wien W → [A]OL Lyonnes → [H]Roma, with 67 projected minutes and a 0.40 clean-sheet share from midfield. Giulia Dragoni (4.5m, Chelsea) sits alongside her at the same price with 13.1 and the highest goal projection of any Chelsea midfielder in the round at 0.43. Bear in mind the game allows a maximum of three players from one club, so Chelsea buyers have to choose.
At the top end the choice is between Mariona Caldentey (8.0m, Arsenal) at 20% owned and Linda Caicedo (8.5m, Real Madrid) at 2%. Their three-round totals are identical at 13.7 — but Linda Caicedo carries a full penalty share and outscores her in Matchday 1 (5.1 against 4.7) despite the tougher program of [H]Paris Saint Germain → [A]Manchester City → [A]Bayern München. The Arsenal run is the safer one; the Real Madrid one is the one nobody else will have.
Forwards: the round leader and the league-phase leader are different players
This is the position where the one-round table and the three-round table disagree, and it is worth saying plainly which side to take. Melchie Dumornay (6.5m, OL Lyonnes) has the highest Matchday 1 projection of any forward at 6.0, off [A]Servette → [H]Chelsea → [H]Inter — that opening fixture carries the highest expected-goals number of the round at 3.82. But Khadija Shaw (9.5m, Manchester City) leads the three-round total at 17.1 and the weighted six-round score at 21.2, both by a clear margin over the field, and she does it with the worst opening fixture of the group.
The reason is what comes after: Khadija Shaw projects 6.0, 5.7 and 7.3 in Matchdays 4 to 6, the best back half in the competition, and she carries a 0.80 penalty share. If you are buying one premium forward and keeping her for the league phase, buy her now rather than after the run starts. If you are buying for the opening night only, Melchie Dumornay is the better single-round pick at 6.5m — but her program falls away after Matchday 3 (3.8, 3.2), so treat her as a three-round asset and know the round you plan to move.
Alessia Russo (10.5m, Arsenal) is the template premium at 61% ownership, 5.7 → 4.8 → 5.3 for 15.8, with a 0.74 penalty share and the best defensive program in the game behind her. She is a fine pick and will be the most-captained name in the round. The genuinely interesting value, though, is lower down: Edna Imade (5.0m, Bayern München) projects 14.4 over the first three with a full penalty share and 74 projected minutes, off [H]Manchester City → [A]Benfica → [H]Real Madrid. That is 1.04 points per million in Matchday 1, at 1% ownership.
| Forward | Team | Price | Owned | MD1 | MD1–MD3 | Program |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khadija Shaw | Manchester City | 9.5m | 27% | 5.9 | 17.1 | [A]Bayern München → [H]Real Madrid → [H]Paris Saint Germain |
| Alessia Russo | Arsenal | 10.5m | 61% | 5.7 | 15.8 | [H]HB Køge → [A]Paris FC → [H]Benfica |
| Melchie Dumornay | OL Lyonnes | 6.5m | 13% | 6.0 | 14.8 | [A]Servette → [H]Chelsea → [H]Inter |
| Edna Imade | Bayern München | 5.0m | 1% | 5.2 | 14.4 | [H]Manchester City → [A]Benfica → [H]Real Madrid |
| Melvine Malard | Chelsea | 6.5m | 0% | 5.3 | 14.1 | [H]Austria Wien W → [A]OL Lyonnes → [H]Roma |
| Géraldine Reuteler | Arsenal | 5.0m | 0% | 4.6 | 13.5 | [H]HB Køge → [A]Paris FC → [H]Benfica |
Captain picks for UWCL Fantasy Matchday 1
The captain scores double in UWCL Fantasy, so this is the largest single decision in the round.
1. Melchie Dumornay (6.5m, OL Lyonnes). The highest projection in the round at 6.0, off the fixture with the highest team expected-goals figure of the whole matchday. That 89% win probability is the second highest on the card, and she is projected 78 minutes, the most of any forward in the top five. Her program is [A]Servette → [H]Chelsea → [H]Inter, so the armband can reasonably stay on her through Matchday 3 as well.
2. Alessia Russo (10.5m, Arsenal). 5.7 projected at home to HB Køge, with a 0.74 penalty share on an 86% win probability — the highest ceiling on the board once spot-kicks are priced in, and the safest of the three if you want the template captain. Behind it sits [H]HB Køge → [A]Paris FC → [H]Benfica, the best three-round clean-sheet program in the competition, so she is a captain option again in Matchday 3 (5.3).
3. Khadija Shaw (9.5m, Manchester City). 5.9 away at Bayern München is the boldest of the three, and the case is the plan rather than the round: she is also the model's top captain option in Matchday 2 (5.5) and Matchday 3 (5.7). Owning her means a captain is sorted for the first half of the league phase, which is usually worth more than winning one armband.
Ellie Carpenter matches Melchie Dumornay's 6.0 projection and is the contrarian option, though a defender's ceiling is lower than a forward's on the same number. Compare the whole projected squad against the model's own single-round solution on the optimal teams for UWCL Fantasy page.
Differentials and hidden gems
Melvine Malard (6.5m, Chelsea) is the standout: 5.3 → 3.2 → 5.6 for 14.1 across the three, a full penalty share, and an ownership share of under 1%. Her program is [H]Austria Wien W → [A]OL Lyonnes → [H]Roma, and the Matchday 3 figure of 5.6 is the second-highest score of any forward in that round — so the dip at Lyon in the middle is bracketed by two of the better forward fixtures in the competition.
Géraldine Reuteler (5.0m, Arsenal) is the same idea one price bracket down: 13.5 over the three off [H]HB Køge → [A]Paris FC → [H]Benfica, the best clean-sheet program in the game, at under 1% ownership. For a midfield differential, Wieke Kaptein (6.0m, Chelsea) projects 12.8 with 0.42 expected goals in the round, and Kim Little (4.5m, Arsenal) gives 11.6 on a flat 3.9 → 3.9 → 3.8 — the most predictable cheap midfielder on the board.
Deeper still, Kim Everaerts (4.5m, Oud Heverlee Leuven) returns 11.2 on 71 projected minutes off [H]Roma → [A]Paris Saint Germain → [A]Servette. That is not a clean-sheet play — it is an attacking-returns play from a defender, with 0.20 expected goals in the opening round alone. More low-ownership names, sorted by round, on the player picks table.
Who to leave out of a Matchday 1 squad
Cata Coll (6.0m, Barcelona). The clearest call in the game. She is 60% owned, and the model projects her 0.0 points and no minutes in all six league-phase rounds, with Gemma Font at a 0.99 starter factor in the same six. Why now: this is the only moment in the season when correcting it is free — no transfer has been spent yet, and the swap also releases 1.5m towards a premium forward.
Ewa Pajor (10.5m, Barcelona). The most-owned outfield player in the game at 64%, and this is not a fixture argument — Barcelona's program is the best in the competition and her Matchday 2 score of 5.2 is one of the better forward numbers in that round. The problem is the price. At 10.5m she projects 4.3 in the opening round on 55 projected minutes, while Alessia Russo costs the same and projects 5.7 with 15.8 over three, and Khadija Shaw costs 9.5m for 17.1. Why now: at Matchday 1 that swap costs nothing at all, and the same decision in Matchday 3 costs a transfer you will want for something else.
Klara Bühl (8.5m, Bayern München). 34% owned for a 2.0 projection in Matchday 1 on 44 projected minutes, against the lowest win probability of Bayern's first three fixtures. Her run does improve — 2.0 → 3.2 → 4.2 — so the honest read is that she is a Matchday 3 buy rather than a Matchday 1 one. Why now: you can have Edna Imade or Momoko Tanikawa at 5.0m for the opening rounds, both of whom out-project her over the first three for less money, and buy back into the German attack in Matchday 3 when the fixtures turn.
Jule Brand (7.0m, OL Lyonnes). 33% owned, and her Matchday 1 is genuinely fine: 4.7 at Servette is a good score and nobody should pretend otherwise. But she is projected 11.7 across the first three against 14.8 for her 6.5m team-mate, and her Matchday 5 figure drops to 2.7. Why now: if you are choosing between the two before a ball is kicked, the cheaper one is ahead on every horizon — and that choice gets expensive once you own the wrong one.
The same reasoning applies to Aitana Bonmatí at 53% ownership: a 10.5m midfielder projected 10.0 over three rounds on 50 minutes, where Vivianne Miedema returns 15.5 for 5.0m. Why now: that price difference is what funds a premium forward, and it only buys you anything if you never spend it in the first place.
Planning the league phase from Matchday 1
Two transfers are available each matchday, which is enough to react but not enough to rebuild, so the opening squad is worth building around programs rather than around the first night. In practice that means one premium forward whose best rounds are still ahead of her, a Barcelona or Arsenal spine for the clean-sheet columns, and the cheap enablers above funding it. A maximum of three players may come from any one club, so the strongest programs cannot simply be stacked wholesale. Our UWCL Fantasy preview hub carries every matchday preview as the league phase goes on, and the fantasy guides cover the general strategy behind these calls.
FAQ
Who should I captain in UWCL Fantasy Matchday 1?
Melchie Dumornay (6.5m, OL Lyonnes) is the model's top captain pick for Matchday 1 with 6.0 projected points, off the fixture with the highest team expected-goals figure of the round. Alessia Russo (5.7) is the safer template option with a 0.74 penalty share, and Khadija Shaw (5.9) is the pick if you want the same captain for the next three rounds as well. The captain scores double.
Which budget defenders are best for UWCL Fantasy Matchday 1?
Martina Fernández at 4.0m is the best of them, projected 12.3 over the first three matchdays on 74 minutes behind Barcelona's [H]Paris FC → [A]Roma → [A]HB Køge run. Estela Carbonell (4.5m, Juventus) returns 12.7 on 76 projected minutes, and Kim Everaerts (4.5m) adds 0.20 expected goals of her own in the opening round. All three are on the UWCL Fantasy player picks table.
Should I pick Ewa Pajor in UWCL Fantasy?
The model prefers Alessia Russo at the identical price and Khadija Shaw for a million less. Ewa Pajor projects 4.3 in Matchday 1 and 14.0 across the first three on 55 projected minutes, against 15.8 and 17.1 for the other two. Barcelona's fixtures are excellent — it is the price and the projected minutes that make her beatable.
Who are the best UWCL Fantasy differentials for Matchday 1?
Melvine Malard (6.5m, Chelsea) at 14.1 over three rounds with a full penalty share is the clearest one, followed by Ellie Carpenter (5.0m) at 2% ownership and Vivianne Miedema (5.0m) at 3%, who leads all midfielders over one round, three rounds and six.
How many matchdays are in the UWCL Fantasy league phase?
Six. The 2026/2027 league phase runs from 22 September to 16 December with all 18 clubs playing in every round, which is why the opening squad is best built on three-round programs rather than on the first fixture alone.
