FPL Triple Captain Guide 2026/27: When to Use It & Who to Pick
The FPL Triple Captain is the simplest chip in Fantasy Premier League and the easiest one to waste. It does exactly one thing: for one gameweek your captain's points are tripled instead of doubled. That makes it worth precisely one extra copy of one player's score — six points if he blanks with an appearance and a bonus, thirty or more if a premium forward hauls in a double gameweek.
This guide covers how the Triple Captain works in FPL 2026/27, how many you get and when they expire, when it is worth playing, and how to pick the player with predicted points. For this week's answer, see our live FPL captain picks, which ranks every captain option for the current gameweek and says whether it is a Triple Captain week. For how the chip fits alongside the Wildcard, Free Hit and Bench Boost, read the FPL chip strategy guide.
What is the Triple Captain in FPL?
The Triple Captain (often shortened to TC) makes your captain score three times his points for one gameweek instead of the usual two. Nothing else changes: your vice-captain still covers if the captain does not play, in which case the vice-captain's points are tripled instead.
Because it only multiplies one player, the Triple Captain's value is easy to calculate in advance. It adds exactly what your captain scores. A captain on 8 predicted points makes the chip worth 8 points; the same chip on a 4-point captain is worth 4.
How many Triple Captains do you get in FPL 2026/27?
You get two Triple Captains in FPL 2026/27, one for each half of the season. The first can be played from Gameweek 1 to Gameweek 19 and the second from Gameweek 20 to Gameweek 38. A first-half Triple Captain that you have not played by the Gameweek 19 deadline is lost; it does not carry over.
The same two-halves structure applies to the Wildcard, Free Hit and Bench Boost, and you can only play one chip in any single gameweek. So a Triple Captain week cannot also be your Bench Boost or Free Hit week. Our FPL chip planner lays out every chip window against the fixtures.
When should I use my Triple Captain in FPL?
Use the Triple Captain in the gameweek where your best captain option has the highest predicted score of the half-season — almost always a premium attacker with two fixtures in a double gameweek. Two fixtures means the extra copy counts across both games, which is the biggest single multiplier available in FPL.
The conditions that make a Triple Captain worth playing:
- A double gameweek. Two fixtures roughly doubles what the chip is worth. A Triple Captain in a single gameweek has to be exceptional to match an average one in a double.
- A premium, penalty-taking attacker. You are buying the ceiling, not the floor. A forward who can score a hat-trick is worth far more here than a defender who reliably collects six.
- Certain minutes. A player who might be rested after an hour wastes the chip even in a double. Check his start probability and projected minutes before you commit.
- Weak opposition in every fixture, read from match odds rather than reputation.
Double gameweeks appear as cup draws and postponements land, so they are rarely known at the start of a half. Our guide to FPL double and blank gameweeks explains how they arise, and the FPL fixture schedule shows every club's gameweek count as soon as a change is in our data.
Should you play the Triple Captain in a single gameweek?
Sometimes. If no double gameweek appears before your chip expires, a Triple Captain on the strongest single fixture left in the window beats letting it lapse — an unused chip is worth nothing. The question to ask is not "is this the perfect week?" but "is this better than every week I have left?"
A single-gameweek Triple Captain is also reasonable when one captain option stands far above the rest: a top forward at home to the weakest defence in the league, with nailed minutes and penalties. If the gap between your best captain and the next option is unusually large, the chip is worth more than usual that week.
Who should I Triple Captain?
Triple Captain the player with the highest predicted points for that gameweek, provided his minutes are secure. Predicted points already combine the things that decide a captain — expected goals and assists, the chance of a clean sheet, bonus points and projected minutes — so the top of a captaincy ranking is also the top of a Triple Captain ranking.
Two adjustments are worth making on top of the raw ranking:
- Prefer ceiling to safety. Two players on similar predicted points are not equal Triple Captain options if one is far more likely to score a haul. A forward's points are spread wider than a defender's, and the wide outcomes are what the chip pays for.
- Ignore ownership. On a normal week a popular captain protects your rank. On a Triple Captain week you are maximising your own points, so pick the best option whoever owns him.
Our FPL captain picks page ranks every captain option for the current gameweek by predicted points, shows what each would score as Triple Captain, and says whether this is a double gameweek. The numbers are recomputed through the day as odds and team news change.
Common Triple Captain mistakes
- Playing it on a hunch in an ordinary week. The chip is worth what your captain scores. In a single gameweek that is rarely more than eight or nine points.
- Waiting for a double that never comes. If the first half offers no double, use the chip on the best single fixture before Gameweek 19 rather than losing it.
- Ignoring rotation. A double gameweek with a midweek game is exactly when managers rest players. Read projected minutes on FPL player picks and starting probabilities on FPL predicted lineups.
- Clashing with another chip. Only one chip can be played per gameweek. If a double gameweek is your Bench Boost week, the Triple Captain has to go elsewhere — plan both together.
- Triple-captaining a defender. It is almost never the highest-scoring option, because a defender rarely reaches the hauls a premium attacker can.

FAQ
What does Triple Captain do in FPL?
For one gameweek your captain scores three times his points instead of two. If your captain does not play, the vice-captain's points are tripled instead.
How many Triple Captains do you get in FPL 2026/27?
Two. The first can be played from Gameweek 1 to Gameweek 19 and the second from Gameweek 20 to Gameweek 38. An unused first-half Triple Captain expires after the Gameweek 19 deadline.
When is the best time to use Triple Captain in FPL?
In a double gameweek, on a premium attacker with secure minutes and two favourable fixtures. If no double appears before the chip expires, use it on the strongest single fixture left in the window.
Can you use Triple Captain and Bench Boost in the same gameweek?
No. FPL allows only one chip per gameweek, so a Triple Captain week cannot also be your Bench Boost, Free Hit or Wildcard week.
Can you cancel the Triple Captain?
Yes. Unlike the Wildcard and Free Hit, the Triple Captain can be cancelled at any point before the gameweek deadline.
